When you drive through the tree-lined streets of Placentia or head out to support our local schools across the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD), it’s easy to focus on how beautiful, safe, and vibrant our corner of North Orange County is. We take pride in our quiet neighborhoods, thriving small businesses, and strong community roots.

Yet behind closed doors, right here in our own backyard, many families, seniors, and children are quietly facing a heartbreaking reality: they don’t know where their next nutritious meal will come from.

At a recent Rotary Club of Placentia meeting, we were honored to welcome Jennifer Massey from Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County as our guest speaker. Her presentation was an eye-opening, deeply moving look at the hidden reality of food insecurity in Orange County—and a powerful reminder of what happens when a community rallies together to protect its own.

Looking Beyond the Stereotypes: Hunger in North OC

When most people picture food insecurity, they imagine extreme poverty or chronic homelessness. But as Jennifer explained, the reality across Orange County looks very different today.

Food insecurity often wears a familiar face. It affects:

Addressing hunger isn't the job of a single organization or local government. It requires a connected network of local businesses, civic groups, volunteers, and neighbors working in tandem.
