Some milestones deserve more than a ceremony.
They deserve a community coming together.
That's exactly what happened on June 27 as residents of all ages gathered to celebrate Placentia's 100th birthday at the city's Centennial 5K. Some laced up their running shoes, others chose to walk, many volunteered behind the scenes, and just as many came to cheer from the sidelines. However they participated, everyone played a part in celebrating a century of a city that so many proudly call home.
It was one of those mornings that reminded you what makes community events so special. They bring together neighbors who may not see each other every day but who all share the same appreciation for the place they call home.
For the Rotary Club of Placentia, the Centennial 5K was about much more than completing the course.
Club members, along with their friends and families, joined the celebration in every way imaginable. Some ran, some walked, some volunteered, and others spent the morning encouraging participants from the sidelines.
Rotary also hosted a booth throughout the event, creating an opportunity to meet residents, reconnect with familiar faces, and share more about the projects and programs that support the Placentia community throughout the year.
Those conversations were just as meaningful as the race itself. Community events have a way of bringing people together naturally, and the Centennial 5K was no exception.
One of my favorite things about local events is that they remind us how connected our community really is.
Everywhere you looked, there were neighbors greeting one another, families spending time together, volunteers lending a helping hand, and participants encouraging complete strangers as they crossed the finish line.
It didn't matter whether someone finished first or crossed the line at a leisurely pace.
What mattered was that people showed up.
To celebrate.
To support one another.
And to be part of a moment that only comes once every hundred years.
That's something worth remembering.
Reaching a centennial is a remarkable milestone for any city.
It's a chance to reflect on the people, organizations, and traditions that have helped shape the community over the past century while also looking ahead to the future.
The Rotary Club of Placentia has been honored to be part of that story, serving alongside so many dedicated volunteers, local leaders, and community partners who continue to make this city a wonderful place to live.
As the Centennial celebration continues, one thing is certain: the strength of Placentia has always come from its people.
Thank you to everyone who ran, walked, volunteered, stopped by the Rotary booth, or simply came out to cheer on friends and neighbors. Your enthusiasm helped make the Placentia Centennial 5K more than just a race. It became a celebration of community, connection, and 100 years of memories.
Here's to the next 100 years.
