Some awards recognize professional achievement. Others recognize character.
As someone who was born, raised, and continues to live and work in Placentia, I have always believed that our city’s greatest asset isn’t just our beautiful neighborhoods or historic parks—it is the people who genuinely care for one another. Within Rotary, one of the highest honors a member can receive isn’t based on career success or the number of years on a roster. Instead, it celebrates something far more meaningful: a life dedicated to generosity, service, and making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
Recently, during a special recognition ceremony, the Rotary Club of Placentia proudly honored fellow member Jim Paddock and me by presenting us with Paul Harris Fellow pins. I was deeply humbled to stand alongside Jim to receive this recognition. While the ceremony celebrated our individual milestones, what it truly highlighted were the enduring values that continue to define Rotary more than a century after its founding: compassion, leadership, and the belief that even small acts of service can create lasting change in our community.
What is a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary?
The Paul Harris Fellow recognition is one of the highest honors within Rotary International. Named after Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, the award is presented to individuals who have made significant financial contributions to The Rotary Foundation or have had contributions made in their name to honor their outstanding commitment to community service. Receiving this recognition signifies a profound dedication to Rotary’s humanitarian efforts, including funding local scholarships, supporting local nonprofits, and advancing global initiatives like clean water access and disease eradication.
Within our local club and across the globe, the Paul Harris Fellow recognition carries special meaning. It is one of Rotary's most respected traditions because it represents much more than financial giving—it reflects a core belief in service.
Receiving a Paul Harris Fellow pin is a reminder that a willingness to invest in others is what strengthens communities both locally and around the world. Meaningful impact is measured not simply by what we accomplish for ourselves, but by how we help our neighbors succeed.
Rotary's motto, "Service Above Self," serves as a guiding principle for every project, partnership, and volunteer effort we undertake.
Service is rarely about seeking recognition. More often, it is found in simply showing up. It’s about volunteering time at a weekend park cleanup, supporting worthwhile causes with non-profits like the Veteran’s Village, Orange County Homeless Intervention Services (OC-HIS) and Lot 318, quietly working behind the scenes to make life better for others. The Paul Harris Fellow recognition celebrates exactly that spirit. Standing next to Jim Paddock—a true example of a servant leader who continually gives his time and mentorship to our city—reminded me of how many incredible people work tirelessly to uplift North Orange County.
Generosity takes many forms. Sometimes it is a financial contribution that helps fund humanitarian projects. Other times, it is the gift of time, experience, mentorship, or a willingness to help wherever a need exists.
Throughout Rotary, these acts of generosity create opportunities that might not otherwise exist—from scholarships for local high school seniors to community service initiatives that assist Placentia families facing challenges. Every act of giving creates a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the moment itself, inspiring others to step up and serve.
When families are considering moving to Placentia or investing in North Orange County real estate, they frequently ask me about the "vibe" of the community. They want to know if it’s a good place to raise children, build long-term wealth, and put down roots.
I always point to organizations like the Rotary Club of Placentia. A neighborhood’s desirability is deeply intertwined with its civic health. When a city has active, engaged residents who willingly fund scholarships, support first responders, and volunteer their time, it creates an incredibly strong community fabric. Homebuyers are naturally drawn to areas where residents take pride in their city. That pride of ownership and culture of care protect property values and make homeownership here a truly sound investment.
The recognition of Jim Paddock and myself as Paul Harris Fellows was much more than a ceremony. It was a celebration of generosity, leadership, and an enduring commitment to making a positive difference in the town we love.
Our community thrives when leadership is rooted in compassion. The Rotary Club of Placentia is a prime example of a community of people who believe that meaningful change begins with a willingness to serve. I am profoundly grateful for this honor, for Jim's inspiring example, and for every neighbor who continues to carry Rotary's mission forward. Because while awards may be presented during a single moment, the legacy of service they represent will continue to shape Placentia for years to come.
