Before You Host This Year’s Holiday Gathering, Check for Food Allergies

Whether you’re currently in a new home or you’ve lived in the same house for decades, the holidays are a special time to gather with family and friends. For some, family gatherings are stressful. But especially for those with food allergies, family gatherings are anxiety inducing.

Experts estimate that nearly 33 million Americans have food allergies, and it’s not just hives, rashes and itchiness. For many, it can result in anaphylaxis and be life threatening.

Here are just a few tips to consider if you’re hosting dinner at your house:

  • When inviting others, ask if there are any food allergies
  • Be clear to your guests with food allergies what ingredients are in the dishes. Keep original food labels for anything that you are serving.
  • Have food-allergy friendly options for your guests. Consider having different colored containers to indicate the dishes are safe to eat.
  • Keep allergy-containing food separate and have separate serving utensils to avoid cross contact.
  • Remember that nuts, milk and eggs are among the most common allergens, but your guests can be allergic to anything. Some may be allergic to turkey or pumpkins!

Your guests may even feel more comfortable bringing their own food. While it may throw off your plans, be flexible and allow your guests the option. The goal is to spend time with one another safely and enjoy the holidays!
