Some people leave behind accomplishments. Others leave behind memories. But every so often, someone leaves behind something even greater—a legacy of kindness, generosity, and service that continues to inspire long after they are gone.
Having lived in Placentia and North Orange County my entire life, I have been privileged to know many of the incredible individuals who form the backbone of our city. Recently, family, friends, and members of the Rotary Club of Placentia gathered not simply to mourn a loss, but to celebrate a life that touched countless others: our fellow Rotarian, Al Shkoler.
The gathering was filled with heartfelt stories, laughter, cherished memories, and reflections that painted a beautiful picture of a man whose impact extended far beyond Rotary meetings and community projects. It was a profound reminder that while a life may come to an end, the difference one person makes in the lives of their neighbors continues for generations.
What does the Rotary motto "Service Above Self" mean for the Placentia community?
"Service Above Self" is the principal motto of Rotary International, guiding the ethical and charitable actions of its members. In the Placentia community, it translates to local leaders, business owners, and residents actively volunteering their time, resources, and expertise to improve the city without expecting personal recognition. It drives initiatives like local youth scholarships, neighborhood beautification, and support for vulnerable families, fostering a tight-knit, resilient, and highly desirable community.
Every Rotary club is shaped by the people who choose to serve. Some members quietly volunteer behind the scenes, while others become mentors, trusted friends, and familiar faces whose presence makes every meeting a little brighter.
For many within the Rotary Club of Placentia, Al Shkoler was all of those things. His dedication to Rotary was never measured simply by the meetings he attended or the projects he supported. It was reflected in the genuine relationships he built, the encouragement he offered, and the deep care he showed for everyone around him. The Celebration of Life provided a beautiful opportunity to reflect on those moments and recognize the lasting influence he had on our club and the broader Placentia community.
One of the most meaningful parts of the celebration came through the voices of those who knew Al best. Friends, family members, and fellow Rotarians shared personal stories that revealed not only what Al accomplished, but exactly who he was as a person.
Some stories brought laughter. Others brought tears. Many reminded everyone in attendance of his generosity, his wonderful sense of humor, his unwavering kindness, and his unique ability to make people feel welcomed and valued. Each memory added another chapter to the story of a life defined not by titles or public recognition, but by meaningful relationships and quiet, consistent acts of service. Together, these tributes created a portrait of a man whose greatest accomplishments were found in the lives he touched.
In my work in Placentia real estate, I am constantly having conversations with families who are looking to buy a home and build long-term wealth in North Orange County. They always ask about the schools, the parks, and the local market trends. But what they are truly looking for is a sense of belonging.
Neighborhood desirability isn't just about beautifully upgraded homes; it is anchored by the people who live inside them. Community pillars like Al are the reason people want to move to Placentia and stay for decades. When a community is filled with residents who actively care for one another, who volunteer, and who build a culture of generosity, it creates an environment where families want to put down deep roots. That incredible sense of community protects property values and makes homeownership here a truly meaningful investment. We are a sought-after city because of neighbors like Al.
The Rotary Club of Placentia extends its heartfelt gratitude to Al Shkoler's family for allowing fellow Rotarians to be part of such a deeply personal and meaningful celebration.
Sharing memories, stories, and reflections together offered an opportunity not only to honor Al's life but also to celebrate the many relationships he built throughout the years. Moments like these remind us that Rotary is far more than a service organization. It is a family built on friendship, compassion, and a shared purpose. Being welcomed into this celebration was a profound privilege, and one our club deeply appreciates.
Although the Rotary Club of Placentia has said goodbye to a cherished member, the values Al Shkoler lived by remain deeply woven into our club's mission.
Every scholarship awarded to a local student. Every community service project completed. Every volunteer who chooses to give their time. Every act of kindness performed in the spirit of Service Above Self continues the legacy he helped build. While his physical presence will be deeply missed, his example will continue to inspire future generations of Rotarians and community leaders. Because the truest measure of a life is not how long it was lived, but how many lives were made better because that person was here.
The Rotary Club of Placentia proudly honors the life, friendship, and lasting legacy of Al Shkoler. His service will be remembered. His kindness will be missed. And his example will continue to guide those who follow in his footsteps.
